After graduating from Harvard, he was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, where he received two degrees in law, and was called as a barrister of the Inner Temple in London. He has taught at universities throughout the world, including Harvard University, the Sorbonne, the University of Rome, Kyoto University, and the University of Chicago, where he was professor of American history for twenty-five years)
